The EU Banned 1328 Chemicals in Cosmetics and US Only Banned 30 Chemicals | Organic Cosmetics

3/18/2018

No matter if you believe that these chemicals can seriously affect your overall health or not, there is one thing that you just need to accept. Back in 2009, the European Union (EU) decided to ban 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics. As you can imagine, this decision wasn't taken lightly and the proper authorities did several studies and researches to get to this ban. However, in 2018, in the US, the list of banned chemicals only sums up 30. So, what's going on here? After all, the US is a developed country and there's no way we can only be banning 30 chemicals from cosmetic products when the EU is banning more than 1,300 for almost a decade now.
US Only Banned 30 chemicals - the EU banned 1328 chemicals
One of the main reasons for this huge difference is how both regions look at chemicals and their effects. While on European Union, they tend to take the preventive approach, on the US we take the reactive approach.

This simply means that in the case of the EU any chemical shows the smallest evidence that is causing any harm, it will be banned. On the other hand, in the US, we need to see a lot of evidence of the damage before the regulation appears.

Talc, Asbestos, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay” $72 million
Just take a look at talc, for example. Ten years ago, talc was used in EU in many different cosmetic products and even on babies. After all, with great moisture absorption features and a soft texture, a lot of people used it. However, it has been discovered that talc could contain asbestos, which is a dangerous substance that can be related to serious lung problems. So, the EU acted immediately and included talc in their chemicals bans list. However, when we look at the US, you can still see a lot of cosmetic products using talc even if Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay” $72 million to the family of Jacqueline Fox, whose death by ovarian cancer was linked to her daily use of talcum-based Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products.”  If you are not sure that your products are safe? Ask your skin care and makeup brand to confirm that they use asbestos-free talc.

Talc free Organic and natural cosmetics
This happens for one reason only: FDA can't find strong evidence that the use of talc can be harmful. However, and what is very strange in the middle of all this, is that they can't also guarantee that talc will be free of asbestos either. So, what are natural alternatives to talc? Arrowroot starch, tapioca starch, rice powder, and oat flour are all safe alternatives that have some of the same properties as talc. They absorb moisture very well, applies nicely on the skin, and absorb oils to help with shiny skin. Rice powder is my favorite alternative; 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Powder Foundation and Blushes and their Bamboo Blur Powder are made with rice powder and I found that they are the beat at keeping the shine at bay.

Talc is just one of the most evident examples. However, the truth is that you can find a lot of dangerous chemicals on the most diverse cosmetic products (and some will even state they are organic). If you are looking for alternatives to your regular cosmetics, I share with you several safe natural skin care and cosmetics that are great alternatives to regular commercial products.
Natural Lip Crayon - Safe Alternative, non-toxic
Natural Blemish Serum - Safe Organic Products against acne and blemish
Vegan Natural Concealer - Safe non-toxic alternative, organic cosmetic brands
While we may all blame FDA for not protecting our health and for not banning these chemicals like the EU is doing, the reality is that the FDA doesn't have a lot of power in these questions, especially about what concerns to cosmetics. Cosmetics regulations haven’t been updated since 1938 and this is clearly not FDA fault but Congress fault.

So, beauty companies can keep getting their skin care products approved like organic even if they are full of chemicals. And until we don't update the legislation and deliver more power to the FDA, we really need to be careful about what we put on our skin. In my post 5 Tips for Transitioning to Organic or Natural Skin Care, I share with you few ideas on how to switch to a safer skin care beauty routine.

We don’t have to use cosmetics that contain potentially dangerous chemicals; there are plenty of natural and organic cosmetic brands that make amazing products.

Beauty Greenwashing: The Secret The Beauty Industry Is Trying To Hide | Organic Cosmetic Brands

3/17/2018

Picture
It's not a big of a surprise that the beauty industry makes millions. After all, can you pass by all those shelves with attention-grabbing products and you don't even consider checking them out? Few people can. However, consumers have been evolving and we are more and more worried about our health. So, when it's time to pick a beauty product, we want to make sure that it won't hurt our skin.

I remember when there were very few natural products. Now, almost all products on the shelves are all natural, all organic. I mean thing are changing; people want more and more safe natural skin care and organic cosmetics. I might make us feel that the beauty industry is taking care of us. However, the truth is that these all-natural, organic claims on packages can be misleading. And what you are experiencing is just a pure and simple case of greenwashing.

Simply put, greenwashing is when a brand states that their products are all organic, green, or natural but, in fact, they are not that safe or natural for us or even environmentally friendly. The truth is that some of these products still include dozens of harmful chemicals. However, and somehow, beauty companies hold back this fact from us. In my Swap It Out - Facial Mist and Toner, I share a case of greenwashing for the Garnier facial mist that claims 99% Naturally derived.

One of the things that you may not know is that claims such as "natural", “organic”, "all green" or similar aren't even regulated by the government. Only products that have the USDA Organic Seal have been certified organic. The Eco Cert seal is issued by the European Union. So, ultimately, beauty companies are not committing any crime by misleading us.

When it comes to skin care, you need to be extra careful about what you put on your body. While everyone knows that a balanced diet is healthier, the same is applied to beauty products. According to more than 40 years of American dermatological research, what you put on your body is as important as what you ingest. And this is one of the main reasons why greenwashing is such a big deal and why more and more people are looking for organic skin care products.

So, how can you fight greenwashing in the beauty industry? How can you be sure that you're using a natural or organic product?

The truth is that when you see the organic or natural label on a product, you expect it to be petrochemical-free, mineral oil-free, paraben-free, silicone-free, fragrance-free, alcohol-free, and no animal testing, but you have to read all the ingredients on your product labels to ensure it. Download my list of dirty 10  ingredients that are toxic and should not be in your products. Don’t just assume that a product is natural and organic because the front of the product claims it. Two apps you might want to download: the EWG Skin Deep  and Think Dirty  apps. Both apps have a database of many natural skin care products and organic cosmetic brands products that have been evaluated for level of toxicity.
Below are brands that I love for their commitment about formulating or selling products that are authentically safe and clean.

100% Pure : This is one of my top favorite brands. They formula many products from skin care to makeup. 100% pure products are vegan and fruit pigmented.

Credo Beauty: All the products are carefully curated to ensure that they are clean and safe to use.

Safe and Chic: I love that you can shop 100s of organic and natural products without leaving their website. That’s a lot of savings in shipping costs. Save 10% Off with the code CHIC.

Vapour Organic Beauty – Love their makeup! It is a little pricey but they make high performing natural makeup products.

CLOVE + HALLOW is clean makeup brand that has affordable non-toxic cosmetics.

Beauty companies aren't interested in spending so much money when they can sell more by showing an attractive package with the organic and natural tags. There are even cases of beauty products stating that they are organic when they are only including a drop of one organic essential oil in their formula.

It is 2-in-1 active cleanser and gentle scrub at the same time.  You can use it twice a day to clean away skin impurities without drying or irritated the skin. This is perfect for sensitive skin.

I just love this product; my skin feels so soft after I use it. You don't need to scrub too hard; You only need to use light circular motions; the small grains clean away impurities. If you have oily skin, this cleansing powder from Eminence works great to remove excess of sebum and helps so much to clear my congested pores. The Aspen Kay Naturals' soaps will be a great addition to your shower routine if you skin have dry and sensitive skin during the winter months. They make their soaps the traditional way with organic oils, shea & coconut butter, and essential oils. And then, they incorporate back glycerin into their soaps. This process creates soaps that do not dry out the skin from its natural oils. If you have breakouts on your body,  I highly recommend using their | Dead Sea Mud | soap; it is one of my favorites.
