Looking for ayurveda oils for body oil, massage oil, or abhyanga?
This oil from Soothing Touch might be for you. You can choose from four options: lavender, sandalwood, Tuscan bouquet, and peppermint/rosemary. There is also an unscented option for those who want to stay away from essential oils. You can find this blend of oil at your local Wholefoods or on amazon for $10. It is quickly absorbed by the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. I usually use it right before bed. After a long day, this is a great oil blend for massage or as a body oil. This all natural body oil contains six oils and nine essential oils.
I chose the ayurveda peppermint and rosemary oil because I love the camphor scent. It doesn't just relaxes my muscles; it also opens my lungs, so I have to say, I sleep like a baby and wake up all refreshed in the morning. Abhyanga is a type of daily self-massage that originated in India to relieve daily stress and toxins build-up. Shop for this oil by clicking here.

Let's me start by talking out when to NOT practice Abhyanga.
It is important to know when to not practice this self-massage because it applies pressure on the skin and uses blend of oils and essential oils. Essential oills have to be used carefully. The ingredients we use in our products, go through our skin and are absorbed in our body. So do not practice Abhayanga:
1. If you have cuts, infected or broken skin, and swollen and painful skin condition.
2. Acute fever, flu, chills
3. If you have a medical condition.
4. When pregnant unless otherwise permitted by a physician.
5. During menstrual cycle avoid completely. The body is already detoxing during this time.
How to practice Abhayanga or Ayurvedic body massage?
Ayurvedic body massage is a comforting, relaxing, and recharging experience. It is supposed to be a daily massage that release daily stress and brings nutrients to the skin and body. I do it during the weekends and during the week when I can. By this self-massage is so effective. I consider it is an act of love toward myself, especially after a very long day. Abhayanga has been practiced in India for generations for its mind and body benefits. They say this self-massage effectively releases the toxins we accumulated in our body during the day. Abhayanga uses herbal massage oils that strengthen the body and the mind.
ABHYANGA - Use 1/2 cup of oil
- Put ½ cup of oil in an bottle that you can squeeze.
- Warm the bottle in a pan of hot water. The oil needs to be mildly warm. Don't overheat it, it can burn.
- Sit or stand comfortably on a towel that can be ruined. I have a designated towel for Abhyanga.
Dr. Claudia Welch, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, an Ayurvedic practitioner and educator, says:
- Massage the oil into your entire body, beginning at the extremities and working toward the middle of the body. Use long strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints.
- Massage the abdomen and chest in broad, clockwise, circular motions. On the abdomen, follow the path of the large intestine; moving up on the right side of the abdomen, then across, then down on the left side. Massage the body for 5-20 minutes, with love and patience.
- Give a little extra time and attention to massaging the oil into your scalp, ears and feet, at least once a week. Apply oil to the crown of your head (adhipati marma) and work slowly out from there in circular strokes. Oil applied to the head should be warm but not hot. Put a
- Couple drops of warm oil on the tip of your little finger or on a cotton ball and apply to the opening of the ear canal. (If there is any current or chronic discomfort in the ears don’t do this without the recommendation of your health care practitioner).
- When you massage your feet, be sure to wash them first when you shower, so you don’t slip.
I started by doing it on the weekends only but it was so relaxing now I do it more. If you want to practice it, start slowly. It is a great experience that I truly enjoy and I hope you can enjoy it too. Some people practice this massage in the shower or in a bath. I don't really use it in the bath or shower because it can clog drains. Some people complain about their sheets being stained from the oils. Soothing Touch oil is actually quickly absorbed, so I did not have this issue so far. The essential oils are very strong though, so if you don't like stronger scents, use the unscented oil.
Have a specific towel from Abhyanga. I will even suggest buying a set of towel just for this comforting and relaxing massage.
Enjoy!!
